Bilge Out Procedure
while pumping out the bilges one must keep in mind the
MARPOL regulation at all times.
1) inform bridge, know the ships location & confirm that
the ship is not in special areas and know how far from land. Inform C/E &
D/E.
2) sound all the tanks, calculate the content, log down the
figure.
3) set up line with bilge pump through OWS for sea water,
check the suction filter. It should be cleaned.
4) shut all other tank valves.
5) prepare OWS for operation and check its control system,
alarms and automatic shut down.
6) start the p/p, flash up the line and fill up OWS by sea
water/clean water.
7) admit some oily water for satisfactory operation of 15
ppm discharge.
8) check remote stopping system of bilge pump for
satisfactory operation.
9) shut sea water valve and open tank valve to carry out the
bilge operation.
10) keep checking test cocks and sounding at regular
interval and O/B discharge for traces of oil.
11) confirm that the tank sounding is lowering and no
leakage seen in anywhere.
12) one responsible person should be present at all times
near the operation area.
13) in case of accidental oil discharge stop pump and shut
off the O/B valve. Do not start till it is rectified.
14) when a tank content lowered to satisfactory level change
over the tanks if required.
15) after pumping out shut the oily bilge tank v/v and open
S.W v/v & flash the whole system.
16) shut off the pump, OWS and the whole plant after
operation.
17) inform D/E and bridge, know the position of the ship,
sound the tank calculate the discharge amount, note time, date etc.
18) log down all the items in log book, tank sounding book,
and in oil record book.
19) take sign by D/E, C/E and keep it ready for any survey.
