Type of vessel



Type ‘A’ vessel: A ship that is designed to carry only liquid cargoes in bulk and in which
1.      smaller deck openings
2.      greater subdivision,
3.      greater buoyancy than grain cargo.
4.      more pumps to quickly control ingress of water after a bilging incident.
5.      lower permeability than cargo ships.
6.      greater GM values.
For this reason, Oil tankers are permitted to have more Summer freeboard than general cargo ships with a similar LBP.
Type ‘B’ vessels: All ships that do not fall under the provisions for Type ‘A’ vessels. For these ships it may be based on:
1.      The vertical extent of damage is equal to the depth of the ship.
2.      The penetration of damage is not more than 1/5 of the breadth moulded (B).
3.      No main transverse bulkhead is damaged.
              4.      Ship’s KG is assessed for homogeneous loading of cargo holds, and for 50% of the designed capacity of consumable fluids and stores, etc. 
Type (B-60) vessels:

  1. If Vessel LBP between 100 - 150 m.
    - Able to survive incase flooding of any single compartment (excluding machinery space).
    If greater than 150 m LBP,

Machinery space must be considered as a floodable compartment.
